Fitting a Participation Tool to a New Place
Urban planning tools need to be adapted to the needs of the local community. That's the idea behind U_CODE's pilot project in Nakuru, Kenya.

Last week, I talked to Hélène Landemore and David Mas about using a new AI tool by make.org to make citizens' assemblies more accessible for people on the outside.

Read the first part of the interview here:
"As long as citizens’ conventions are black boxes, they lack legitimacy"
A new AI tool that makes citizens assemblies' more accessible has been launched for the Citizens' Convention on the End of Life in France.

Bürgerrat zur Verkehrswende, klingt nach einer guten Idee. Aber initiiert vom Bildugnsministerium und kaum kommuniziert, ist er eher nur ein weiteres Beispiel halbherziger Partizipation.

One of the processes to be found on the platforms is about identifying spaces for new bike racks. To make a suggestion they direct you to a pdf form on a different website.

I really enjoyed this conversation with Raphaël Pouyé on potential learnings from Civich Tech in the Global South.
In our latest interview, Raphaël Pouyé explains that “the Global South is less naive about the benevolence of governments and they want to trust, but they also want to verify”.

Therefore a lot of African civic tech is focused on transparency and involving citizens in monitoring public policy.

Raphael Pouyé, democracy support and participatory governance expert, points out, we can learn a lot from Civic Tech in Africa.

My relatively recent article on the suspicion that deliberative processes initiated by some big tech companies on AI are mostly distraction or "democracy washing" seems like a suitable first thing to post on this platform.
Don’t Use Deliberative Democracy to Distract From AI Regulation
When tech companies are behind deliberative processes, it can look less like democratisation, and more like a distraction from regulation.
