The enormous tusks of hippos are formed from the top incisors and lower canines. Commonly used for defense and attack, these grow continuously through the animal's life and are sharpened as they are ground together!

This #trilobite fossil provides a snapshot of life in the West Midlands 428 million years ago 🌊

The area was covered by a warm, tropical sea, and this species, Calymene blumenbachii, nicknamed the Dudley bug, comes from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation of Dudley.

This mineral specimen is galena with calcite and milky quartz and comes from our Robert Jasper More collection. More collected minerals from the old lead mines of South Shropshire.

This striking rock is none other than obsidian, which forms when lava cools rapidly with high silica content. This results in no crystals forming, giving obsidian its characteristic glassy appearance.

This thin section image shows augite in a dolerite specimen from Auvergne, France. Augite is a common mineral in mafic igneous rocks.
