A key publication from the Gibson ‘Upper Seeds’ #LongTermExperiment #LTE registered with us revealed that land once used for growing crops can be restored through #grazing.

Astonishing: “in 2024, British bumblebees experienced their worst year since the BCT started its monitoring campaign…the numbers of bees were down by more than one fifth…one of our commonest species, the Red-tailed Bumblebee declined a staggering 74%” 🐝

Excellent summary article here ⬇️
A helpful summary of recent wild bee news from the UK monitoring and recording schemes, including PoMS, @bumblebeetrust.bsky.social, and the BWARS records that feed in to the indicators published by @jncc.bsky.social
Recently the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BCT) reported that, in 2024, British bumblebees experienced their worst year since the BCT started its monitoring campaign.

All of which begs an important question: what is happening to wild #bees in Britain?

Really interesting new research using a fantastic long term dataset:

“phosphorus loads in the River Thames have decreased by approximately 80 per cent over the past 40 years — thanks to improved wastewater treatment and agricultural practices – yet algal bloom threats persist.” 🐟
Climate change is increasing the risk of algal blooms in the River Thames despite four decades of declining phosphorus loads. A study by UKCEH Fellow Prof Helen Jarvie, now at @uwaterloo.ca, analyses the river’s 150-year water quality record to explore the trends.
