I get asked a lot for advice I'd give first time writers and honestly, it's... just get the words on the page. That's it. Don't worry about anything else until you've got the words on the page. Let that first draft be messy and glorious and fun. Deal with the rest of it later.

Hey everyone! In the spirits of nanowrimo, I am starting to share a few pages of my work. Last week I posted the first page of a short story and I am doing the same today.

Water Reclamation Dam: North America, West Coastline - 40 years post apocalyptic event “What do you mean I can’t pass” Gale the Ghoul yelled back to the Raiders face guarding the gate. “I was just here the other day picking up my stamps!” He pointed to the Raiders chest. “Watch it Gale” Rick the Raider set up his hand and calmly said, trying to defuse the Ghoul. “Just because you and I have a friendly arrangement” Rick pointed back and forth several times with the sickle in his hand. “Doesn’t mean that they do” he pointed towards the line of other Ghouls waiting single file; the line stretching an uncounted distance back. The gate where they were rotating through was maybe a quarter way up the Dam’s long highway length. “Remember, this.....” Rick pointed to Gales chest. “Is a privilege” Rick pushed the quite words with his sickle slightly into Gales chest. Pulling Gales attention away from the other similar lines with similar inhabitants, different in looks and lines only, folding past the one with the Ghouls; lines along lines as wide as the Dam was. Levelling each other in length as they moved ahead at their own speed and pace towards their own gates; just like the interstates that used to connect them together in another line and another time. Gale rubbed and pinched where his nose used to be, looking over the edge of the Dam; their line being the furthest on one side of the Dam. ‘Privilege, a privilege I bought and paid for, a hundred fold over by now’ he rubbed under his black bagged and holed eyes, trying to rub an idea into existence that wasn’t coming. Glancing back to Rick “Common, we can work somethi….” Gale was cutoff from the siren going off ahead of them at the gate where he was headed. The red pulse lighting the night sky over the Dam, blue flashes from tiny lights edging them in formation in the line he and them stood, strobing and beeping along

‘’Okay Justin’’ the woman placed her notebook and recorder on the table. ‘’I’m Patty. I’ll be doing this years evaluation of your hospital recovery’’ she sat down opening her notebook and turned the recorder on. ‘’’My names Patty L. One of the psychologist’s at Chance Medley Asylum. Lets start at the beginning Justin.’’ She looked up from the file in the notebook. “Tell me about the car ride again” Patty asked him over the table, the only table, sitting in the center of a white room; a singular door in and out. “I already did” Justin snapped back from his lost gaze and thoughts in the far right corner of the room. The eyes of the terror that only he could see. ‘Just another shrink. What are you? The tenth, twelfth. All fucking cunts you are. Talk to one every year I’m in this nut house. I belong in it but that’s beside the point. I don’t want to be here and I’ve talked to you before.’ He twisted and constricted his arms at the thought. The white cotton of the straight jacket made to constrict his upper body, the scrape and burn against his skin increasing as he twisted back and forth. “Let me out of this” he looked her up and down; once over as he said it. “And I’ll tell you alright” staring at her nose, the center of it flapping down over her lips. ‘Let me out, and I’ll break that nose like a folded noose knot’ “Play along” He looked back to the corner of the room again. The terror only his eyes could see walking towards them with the words. “Just for now, at least.” The young woman whispered calmly; twisting each word with her sinister and sweet grin. Her grey hair covering her shoulders; her soft firm voice pushing his gaze back to Patty’s face with a flip of her hair. ‘’Do you still see her?’’ Patty followed his gaze asking the question.
