@mrjamesob.bsky.social talks about the inconceivable scale of the fires in LA.
Not inconceivable to Australians.
Gariwerd (VIC) lost an area the size of Singapore late 2024.
For some reason, & I suspect it’s an anachronism, people think extreme weather in Australia is the rule. #auspol 🧵 1/5

A bunch of people who have never been interested in protecting kids from school shootings want to protect CEOs from being shot. I just think it's revealing that these people can't help but show us which lives they think matter at every turn.

Go Nannas!

Thinking that Knitting Nannas were winding down for Christmas while two of our own were locked onto a giant tree flattener shutting down Forestry’s logging of the Bulga State Forest for another day!

There's no rest for us Nannas!

The apricots in the backyard aren't quite ripe yet, and some weird part of my brain is feeling overly competitive with the birds.

I don't remember this happening last year.

And I've eaten more than one under ripe apricot so far. They're good!

Crunchy though.

Relatable.
My curiosity, impulsiveness, principle, and honesty have all combined to severely sabotage my economic well-being, & it's something I've been aware of for over 20 years.

Just dozens upon dozens of examples that would make the grind-set, money-getter type wince just to think about.

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago.

We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better.

It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍

A good reads review that may be of interest

Partial quote:

These companies don't care about you, or your kids, or your grandkids. They have zero qualms about burning down the planet for a buck, so why should we have any qualms about burning them down to survive?

I wish more people would apply the same logic of "for profit is bad in healthcare" to other things surrounding human needs, like say food and housing. Too much to ask? #PeopleOverProfit

They're also actively on a recruitment drive (NSN et al)
As a local, I’m concerned with a rise in anti immigrant neo nazi graffiti, posters & stickers. These increased during lockdown & previously the area has been targeted by fascist groups of radicalised white men, emboldened now by the US election & increased far right representation in Europe #auspol

Slowly but surely this Pack continues to grow. Almost a hundred in this 4th version.

If we don't really know how a tree lives, we won't be able to take care of it.

I was just thinking about this, and here we are:
The Panopticon only works because the prisoners believe that they are being watched, even when they actually aren't

“Willow trees can accumulate a lot of heavy metals and other contaminants,” Didukh says
... The plant has a unique ability to absorb oil, nitrogen, and phosphorus. It can hold onto heavy and toxic chemicals within its body and in the soil around its roots, where it nurtures microorganisms..."
In Slavic culture, willows symbolize hearth and home and are seen as protectors against evil. Could the return of seedlings and thickets along a former reservoir herald a rebirth of Ukrainian cultures and landscapes?

For The Reservoir That Was Dammed, It Is Now Resurrection Time
Three weeks after the destruction of Kakhovka Dam, scientists found new hope in the remnants of the reservoir through willow plants.

Really really don't want to mow the law. It would be nice to not have to have lawn! (renting. yay).

Also simultaneously recognise the privilege of having a back yard, having some fruit trees, and having all the amazing birds, insects and other life that come with that.

Who knew shared hatred of Woolworths could actually unite the working class, even those who don't feel as if they are members of the working class, and don't identify with labour movement politics.

I haven't seen such a broad australia wide anti company sentiment during a strike in recent years
