One of our newest treasures: an #earlymodern Catechismus Romanus bound with a 1613 #manuscript student notebook of Jesuit Cornelius a Lapide’s lectures at Leuven. A wonderfully personalized & used book with a doodle of a long-nosed (😉) figure by its unknown owner.

Evening, blueskyers. I confess I have done very little today apart from steam cleaning the kitchen floor, worktops and the inner glass door of my oven. The glamour never begins.

Just been listening to an outstanding address on 'Britain in a Changing World' by Sir John Major at the LSE. I never rated him as a prime minister but like Gordon Brown he has become far more impressive out of office rather than in it. His views on the wretchedness of populism were superbly drawn

Je suis in That Stratford. Pretty place but the stations on WMT need overhauling as does the rolling stock. Birmingham Moor Street station is such a throwback and quite nostalgic

It should inspire those engaged in similar struggles around the world - and remind those of us lucky enough to live in America that we have a solemn responsibility to constantly preserve and defend our own hard-won democratic traditions.

Marie Antoinette was executed more than 200 years ago. This year alone has seen a major museum exhibition, a new animated film, an ongoing TV series and a new biography about her. Why can't we stop talking about Marie Antoinette? My latest podcast investigates: pod.link/1489560920/e...

Word of the Day is ‘tandsmør’, from Danish. It describes bread that is buttered so thickly you can see tooth marks in it after every bite. Its literal translation? ‘Tooth butter’.
