Beautiful Green Hellebore, Helleborus viridis, in woodland on the edge of Croydon. 💚 It is a member of the Ranunculaceae, the Buttercup family. What look like green petals are in fact sepals, and the petals themselves are reduced to small tubular nectaries (visible in third photo). #WildflowerHour

In between torrential downpours (when will it end?? ☔️) managed to see some lovely blooms for #wildflowerhour today.

13 species in flower, including the first alexanders and three-cornered leek of the year. Lovely clump of snowdrops and dainty violets galore.

Snowdrops out in abundance this week around the Whitby area 🤍💚

Found these snowdrops at Runswick Bay on a very wet and windy day (surprised camera got them in focus)!

Someone I work with came up with this solution for Google Books searches failing. Add -google to the search. I'm now getting results. Worth a try!

Discworld QOTD, from The Last Continent

‘“We put all our politicians in prison as soon as they’re elected. Don’t you?”

“Why?”

“It saves time.”’
Discworld QOTD, from Thud!

“Beating people up in little rooms…he knew where that led. And if you did it for a good reason, you’d do it for a bad one. You couldn’t say ‘We’re the good guys’ and do bad-guy things.”
Discworld QOTD, from Making Money

"‘Even tyrants have to obey the law.’ He paused, looking thoughtful, and continued: ‘No, I tell a lie, tyrants do not have to obey the law, obviously, but they do have to observe the niceties.’"

I wait outside the closed shop in the quiet darkness. The painting of Eeyore is still leaning against the box with the papers in. The shopkeeper arrives and I lift the papers out of the box. The creaking lid. The sound of a passing plane.

Read Carpe Jugulum recently. So much of the story relevant today, particularly this, treating people as things.

It's that magical time of year when private jets descend on a Swiss mountain village to discuss climate change and poverty! Anyway, here's my annual reminder. I'll stop posting this when they stop avoiding the real issue: their own massive tax avoidance 💰

I wrote this some time ago - with all of us knowing this day would come, and Rob, of course, fighting like the bloody-minded bastard he was to the very end. He irrevocably changed my life - and how our country saw itself. www.theguardian.com/music/2026/j...
Rob Hirst was a force of nature, a born showman who led Midnight Oil from the back
Phenomenal drummer and percussionist was an equally accomplished songwriter who embodied the band’s bloody-minded spirit
