Toronto and single stair reform. I've mostly stayed out of this debate out of sheer exhaustion, but Pamela's thread will be enlightening to a few advocates outside Canada, and I also had reflux at the City response b/c it really gelled for me that we have a cultural and not a regulatory problem...
After TO Council passed a motion indicating the City was open to Alternative Solution Proposals for a single stair in apts up to 4 storeys, I applied for a single stair in a 3 storey Part 9 6plex.

I’m told it’s the first one, so it’s a test case. Here’s how it’s going.

Nice throwback reference by @shawnmicallef.bsky.social to the Garrison Creek Demonstration Project. Another ambitious Toronto idea - it was even part of the 1996 Venice Biennale. Should be more than plaques in the sidewalk!
Back in 1996 Brown + @kstorey.bsky.social created a demonstration plan to trace Garrison creek in and around the park w storm water ponds. I think it could inspire a linear trail thru city today (as I write in column).

Excellent article Toon. I’m sadly surprised by the lack of concern from other architects and all those urbanists complaining about the appearance and state of the public realm.

Tonight an unbelievable **34,000 people** gathered for our Denver rally to take on billionaires and win our country back.

This was the largest political gathering in Denver since Obama in 2008.

Also bigger than the 2024 DNC.

And the largest ever rally in Bernie’s career (and obviously, mine too).

Canada will never fold. Elbows up.
Trump’s betting Canada will fold, but this is a country that spent 30 years fighting Denmark over a rock in the Arctic just for the principle of it.

If you missed it, here’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s, quite sincerely, historic speech. It’s for, and is galvanizing, Canadians but he also speaks very directly to our allies in the US. Please hear us out.
I do find myself thinking how much I’d give up, and do, for this imperfect country.

I totally agree - if they really cared about ANY of these issues, they would work together.
I’m going to say this again. Given that the Ontario Liberal, NDP and Green Parties are WELL AWARE of the likelihood that splitting the vote would hand the Doug Ford Conservatives another comfortable majority govt with a small % of the vote, I’d think they would put aside ambitions AND WORK TOGETHER.
This is SHOCKING. Among everything else that’s despicable about this, ITS A CLEAR ADMISSION THAT THEY KNOW THAT DOING THIS WILL OBVIOUSLY ENDANGER LIVES.

People rode bikes on these streets before the bike-lanes (albeit fewer) and they will again after. The inevitable blood will be on Ford’s hands.
