New Gist: Trans rights are Data rights

An unusually long Gist on the data protection implications of the UK Supreme Court's decision to define what is the meaning of the word 'woman' in a single UK Act.

(Also: the CJEU, colonialism, Joyce's Ulysses and Sinn Féin)

The Gist: Trans rights are Data rights
A UK court has made a decision defining genders which has put it at odds with a less noticed, more important, decision from the CJEU. This is the Gist.

Pretending that "biological woman" is anything other than a phrase invented to attack trans women is utter nonsense. Barely used before 2016 and an enormous increase in the last 2 years

Mine figured out how to turn the air purifier in my bedroom from quiet mode to tornado because touch sensitive buttons also work with paws apparently

I use the word "transsexual" in part to describe a specific material circumstance but mostly because it just sounds cool

I've been thinking about this all day. Dora Richter, who we thought was lost, growing roses
The most important thing I learned — from Dora, really— is that joy is a weapon. They want us to believe we lost, that we are small and doomed to the dark. Dora grew roses, raised birds, sang, danced at parties. She LOVED. In the middle of everything, your light and joy is what they can’t snuff out.

What often surprises me is, certain specific topics aside, when it comes to policy, what trans women need is essentially the feminist agenda. Bodily autonomy, economic equality, protection from vulnerability, from men, a woman-friendly culture and state, etc. What to do as allies is really not hard.

When I was 10 I watched a pirated copy of Terminator 2 on VHS at a friend's house. I mainly remember the human skull being crushed under tank treads and reassuring my friends mum that my parents would absolutely be happy with me watching it, a lie which she accepted without question
Did you watch R rated movies before you were 17? If you did, do you remember what your first R rated movie was?

Mine was Starship Troopers. Not sure exactly how old I was but I couldn't have been older than 11 based on where we lived
