[Why] is furosemide susceptible to malabsorption from "gut edema"?

When a patient with heart failure is hospitalized with congestion I often hear "let's use IV furosemide; they're probably not absorbing the PO."

It's a comment unique to furosemide.

But is it accurate?

Woman with a recent dx of metastatic cervical cancer presented with fatigue and noted to be hypotensive with a creatinine of >9 and anuria. Started on fluids, vasopressors and antibiotics without improvement in either parameter

1/n sharing a case: Young adult comes in 4 elective ENT procedure. Receives several doses of ketotolac for 3-4 days + empiric vancomycin. Then, labs are checked: Cr 4.0, up from 1.0. UA: neg blood/protein/cells. High suspicion 4 IV NSAID / IV Vanco hemodynamic/tubular insult. Non-oliguric, lytes OK
