I work at the intersection of education policy & education politics. Former school board member & chair in Fairfax County. Former member -VA General Assembly. Former CEO of NASBE. Author of 2 books about schools & families. Crazy hoops fan -UNC & WNBA.
With remarkable understatement, @hcrichardson.bsky.social says today, “The administration appears not to be able to attract the caliber of federal officials to which Americans have become accustomed.”

Also - he had some traffic tickets. (WTAF?) And that's why he needs to sit in a Salvadoran prison? Maybe someone could FOIA other Trump appointees to see about their traffic violations.
We’re going to annex Canada and invade Greenland but we can’t request return of an innocent man from El Salvador.

I wonder if they sent their Iowa canvassing teams to Greenland. They’re used to doorknocking in the cold.

There are a number of things that are worse than the last week and a half before your book is due: Root canal. Job interviews. Cleaning under the sink But in the pantheon of awful stuff, it’s up there. Don’t expect to see me a lot here or IRL until it’s in. Which cannot come soon enough.

From Politico PM today. Good grief - because the President can't spell "Colombia," now will Politico just change the spelling? Is Columbia closer to the Gulf of America?

"Meanwhile, after the U.S. and Columbia narrowly avoided a trade war over deportation flights yesterday . . ."

I have other recipes (jule kage, anyone?) that look exactly like this!!
My grandmother’s handwriting (she was Norwegian) and this is the old family recipe for meatballs from the old country. My mom is 99, and remembers her making them as a little girl from this recipe. 🍜🍽️

With sadness, we have learned of the passing of longtime Mt. Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland. There is hardly a square inch of the district that was not affected by his work and vision. On a personal note, he gave me my start in politics by appointing me to the School Board. RIP, dear friend

This is, apparently, not a joke.

Most people here still say we’re flying out of “National Airport.” So good luck with renaming the Gulf.

RFK Stadium transfer: D.C. Gvt. gets control of the sports complex on East Capitol Street - could lead to a new NFL stadium. In the deal, the MD Ntl Guard gets the D.C. Ntl Guard’s F-16 fighter wing. - Politico. Henry IV said, “Paris is worth a mass.” And I guess the RFK site is worth a squadron.

I have enormous admiration for Rep. Bobby Scott. But right now, we (and by “we,” I mean the United States of America) need his voice and his vote in the House of Representatives. Bad stuff is going to be proposed. He can help stop it.

Sadly, Vivian, you’re right. But one of the leading voices on this issue just announced she’s running again.
We have lost so many of the senior legislators that I'm afraid this won't be the case much longer.
December 12, 2024 at 12:44 AM
True. Massive Resistance in VA was based on vouchers for white kids. Many Virginians (including senior legislators) still remember, which is why vouchers and charters have such a hard time getting legislative support.
This is literally true.

School vouchers were pioneered as a way to help white supremacists send their kids to a new wave of private "segregation academies" created expressly for the purpose.

Vivek, Elon, and I will likely only ever agree on one thing: ending Daylight Savings Time. So maybe if they and their little pretend department could just focus on that …

Do you follow Brian McNally?(@bmcnally14.bsky.social) Because you should!
Awesome win for the Wizards tonight. Losing streaks like this are brutal. Players and teams can check out. It’s hard on everyone. With a bunch of dudes out hurt they beat the Nuggets.

In there somewhere: “I have lost the ability to write.”
My writing process is usually:

a) I got this
b) well, fuck
c) wait that part was real good
d) wait no that part sucks
e) I am a god of this place
f) the fuck is this shit, who do I think I am, why am I here
g) oh man I just figured it all out
h) mistakes were made
I) existential dread

If, as Henry IV famously said, “Paris is worth a mass,” is the RFK site worth an air squadron?

Serving on a local school board (I did for almost 10 years in Fairfax County, VA) is hard and also so rewarding. I’ll post links to resources to help defeat the M4L crowd.
If we want to do this, people who believe in democracy need to start gearing up to run for school boards across the country ASAP.
When we survive this dark chapter and there are sane people back in charge, can we agree that education and specifically civics education to ensure an informed, educated citizenry will be a high priority?

Having previously suggested that @benwikler.bsky.social would be a candidate for my personal Mount Rushmore, this seems like an easy option.
An absolute no brainer for DNC chair is @benwikler.bsky.social . Thanks to what Ben built at WisDems, when the country swung ~6 points to the right this cycle, Wisconsin only swung 1.5 points to the right, while actually *adding* seats in the state legislature and holding onto Tammy Baldwin's seat.
