I have constructed my theory
Discord message that says "Proposing a hypothesis of yuri archetypes. Rather than representing contrasting personalities or aesthetics (tsundere/genki, plain girl/gyaru, etc.), this is an archetype embedded in the very nature of the narrative itself, and often central to it. I'll refer to it as **Caged Bird GL**." Continued: "Within this archetype, you have two characters: the **sparrow** and the **canary**. The general flow is that the sparrow, more often the POV character or protagonist, is an outsider who stumbles upon the canary confined within a metaphorical cage. Said cage is some form of systemic oppression--misogyny, homophobia, classism, capitalism, parental control, or some other superstructure--expressed through an entity or locale that has shaped the canary's life and personality into what it currently is. The sparrow, as an outsider, is often more rough or masculine, if not outright butch, compared to the more femme and demure canary. The main thing that separates the two, however, is agency: the sparrow is used to fending for itself, while the canary has been conditioned to be a passive accepter of its fate. The sparrow is feisty, but ultimately not almighty: it cannot break the cage on its own, nor easily defeat any larger birds that may inhabit the narrative. But its courage and spirit display a sense of Freedom that the canary is unused to, while the canary's struggle may illuminate the previously naive sparrow as to the true nature of the world or of suffering." Continued: "The narrative centers around the sparrow--through kindness, empowerment, and love--"opening" the cage for the canary and giving it a chance to fly free. What the canary does with that open cage varies. She may learn to live unshackled by the system she was raised under. The sparrow may stubbornly try to pull her out, creating conflict. She may poke her head out and shrivel back in. The canary may feel pressured by other birds in the cage, and the sparrow may come to realize its demands are selfish. In fact, rarely is the exact nature of the outcome the same: it may end in tragedy, bittersweetness, or a purely happy ending. Where this differs from more normative m/f romances is that the sparrow rarely (if ever) directly rescues the canary as if they are subject and object; rather, the sparrow's actions encourage the canary to self-actualize and use her wings herself." Continued: "For an example, I'll use a work we're all familiar with: Revue Starlight. Karen is the Sparrow and Hikari is the Canary. What constrains Hikari (and everybody else, to some degree) is the system of the Top Star, that dictates only a single girl can prosper under fame and recognition (a reflection of the real life Top Star system used by the Takarazuka Revue). Karen's opening of the 'cage' is in showing Hikari the viability of both of them being co-stars: an opening that Hikari cowers from by (literally) pushing Karen away and attempting to sacrifice herself so she doesn't steal her brilliance. Karen is undeterred, of course, and the two end up fighting, but appear to dismantle the cage, averting tragedy and staying together. Then comes the movie, where it's apparent that, all along, the sparrow, too, was in the cage, and that cage is larger and more enticing than they could possibly imagine--yet at the same time, both Karen and Hikari move onward of their own volition, having completed their Revue Starlight. This can be a somewhat reductive framework in this instance and others (as it's primarily focused on relating the characters to a system of control rather than in their personalities and aspirations, which can vary wildly), but I believe it has use value."

Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)
Tl;dr: The vast majority of adults will never have to interact with our age assurance systems and their experience won't change, because we know Discord and how people use it, so we're designing to respect privacy and deliver a safer experience while minimizing friction for adults. Hey folks – I’ve been on Discord since very early 2016 and actually joined the company in 2017. Safety is one of my areas, so today’s announcement on our blog is something I’ve been pretty involved with. I’ve always cared about Discord's approach to privacy (E2EE for A/V was another of my projects here), so I figured I’d add some more context to today's news. I can say confidently that the vast majority of people will never see age verification. I say this because we launched age assurance in the UK and Australia in 2025, and we have some pretty good data on this now. The idea here is that we can pre-identify most adults based on what we already know (not including your messages!), and that looks to get us pretty far here. No face scans, no IDs, for the vast majority of adults. And if you are one of the smaller subset of folks that we can't definitively pre-identify, then still, you only have to do it if you're accessing age-restricted servers or channels, or changing certain settings. That's really not most users. (Altho... might be more Redditors, tbh.) Last, I know that there is concern about privacy and data leaks. That's a real concern. The selfie system is built purely client-side, it never leaves your device, and we did that intentionally. That'll work for a bunch of users who aren't pre-identified as adults. But if you do end up in the ID bucket, then yeah, you're right that has some risk. We're doing what we can to minimize this by working with our range of partners (who are different partners than the data leak you read about), and if it's any help, we learned a lot internally from the last issue. But I get if that doesn't necessarily inspire more confidence. Anyway, we’ll be sharing more next month as we get closer to the global roll out about the system, including the technology behind it in March. I honestly wouldn't be happy if we didn't build something good and I am excited about what we’re launching, but please let us know what you think when we share more details. And I really appreciate everybody's feedback here today. We’re definitely reading it!

my opinion on the Bad Bunny halftime show, and non-English music in general, is that i think a need to “be able to understand the lyrics” displays an embarrassing shallowness of the speaker to appreciate the voice as an instrument & to appreciate music as something other than a lyric delivery system
