The most promising alternative at the moment is Stoat, it's more or less a Discord clone, although it's missing features and has some problems of its own.
Personally, I'm in favor of bringing back forums and IRC.

We should really be lobbying for this instead of Discord age verification:
Make it mandatory for all tech companies to include a baked-on visible icon for built-in parental controls (that can't be removed or hid) on the main screen of all OSes built in their PCs, phones, tablets, and game devices!
