Dear Christians,

A reminder that there’s a point at which complacency becomes complicity.

I’m not telling you to not believe in Jesus. I’m telling you that if your church openly embraces or actively ignores the reality of white supremacy and racism, you don’t have to go to that church.

But for the arbitrary nature of birth and circumstance, any of us could be living in poverty, dependent upon assistance to put food on the table, to take our children to the doctor, and to pull ourselves out of debt. The lack of empathy, the pure callousness on display in this bill, is infuriating.

May every single human being on this planet be safe.

May every single person be protected from harm.

May we bring into being a time in which we are all free from those who do evil— together, speedily and in our days.

I know it’s been observed a thousand times before but it really never does get less jarring to grow up being told God is love and self-sacrifice is the point and then to become an adult and have those same people turn around and be like “you thought you were supposed to LOVE people?! Stupid woke”
"suicidal empathy" is really a hell of a thing for a supposed christian to be saying
“A new woke pope.”

The two most relevant works I’ve read/am reading lately are the Mayfield’s Strongwilled project and @swordsjew.bsky.social Wild Faith. Excited feels like the wrong word to use here because of the subject matter, but I can’t wait for this collaboration!
We have the MOST validating STRONGWILLED podcast episode ever for exvangelicals coming out on Monday with Talia Lavin. It's like a little treat in the midst of all the horrors.

I know this will do very little good but can we please understand that if a podcast or author attempts to show the harms of the white supremacist Christian patriarchy but they don't source or talk to any queer folks (and especially trans ppl), then it is really just perpetuating the same system?

All the “third way”, “both sides”, apolitical stances from evangelical churches and pastors has prepared them to be totally unprepared for this political crisis.

Questions to ask yourself if you are feeling overwhelmed, like me.

1. I know you care about all the issues, but is there one or two that you are deeply passionate about and connected to?

2. Who is already working on those issues and what do they need? Can you commit to fulfilling that need?

It’s been said before, but it’s important that we plainly state that any fight against DEI anywhere is a fight for segregation.

It is white people plainly saying they do not want Black or brown people in the public square. Full stop.

Call it what it is.

I really didn’t want to write about love this week, but I wanted to keep up the #Advent focus. Something shifted in the process of writing. open.substack.com/pub/drchaneq...
Are Christians Capable of Love?
After two thousand years of Advent, we still fail at the Great Commandment.

This is White Christianity at work: refusing to see the evil in front of you and trusting authority figures even when they’ve literally put out a plan about who they’re going to harm and how. And you don’t have to be White to think this way because White Christianity is imperialist.

I don’t want to be part of a Christianity that views gay people as evil and white supremacists as righteous.
