Coastal scientist and applied statistician. Especially interested in water quality and other long-term monitoring. Non-workily, I enjoy birdwatching, reading, sewing, bread-baking, and looking at cat pictures.

Quarto friends! I need your help:
We are implementing a new QMD parser in Quarto. It will be super nice. But it's a big change, and we want to minimize the impact.
1. Can you share a link to your Quarto project at github.com/quarto-dev/q...
2. repost this and let your Quarto friends know too?

Some lovely specimens of the earliest vascular land plants collected last weekend with the Mid Wales Fossil Group from forestry track exposures near Bishops Castle. We think there are probably 2 Cooksonia species here in the Silurian rocks. There were also tiny fragments of Eurypterids #FossilFriday

With good defaulta it beats the obvious alternatives, scales better than people think (like 10000+ data points) and isn't as sensitive to binwidth or bandwidth estimators

what's in your view the best data-visualization technique/type of plot/chart? in terms of concisely conveying information effectively and aiding substantive understanding. obviously depends hugely the use case, etc. but if you had to pick one in a vacuum?

Pro-tip - when you're reusing code (say, code from precipitation data, applied to temperature data), remember to update any unit conversions you're doing.
Otherwise you'll be very confused trying to figure out why the maximum monthly temperature in your 30-year period is 1.13.

There's so many parallel sessions at #JSM2025 that it's hard to choose where to go, so I web-scraped the schedule and made a chatbot to help.
I've made it public, so hopefully it can help you too - try it out 👉 shiny.mitchelloharawild.com/jsm2025/

I installed a camera to see what was going on with our water feature that kept being taken apart at night (I recently filled it with rocks with a central fountain so it wouldn’t be constantly muddy), figuring I’d see a raccoon. I hadn’t expected an all-night pool party! 😂

I THINK they’re mad because of the hardscaping? Not entirely sure.
(One guy tried to claim it didn’t store CO2. Do you want a lecture on prairie carbon sequestration? Because this is how you get a lecture on prairie carbon sequestration.)
