Fleeing from Brexit Britain to live the dream in Wexford, Ireland. Gorgeous beaches, beautiful countryside, history, art, and music oozing out of landscape. Special interest in social care in England.
How to talk to a person with dementia when they have seemly lost the ability to converse? It depends entirely on the individual concerned. I look to body language and facial expressions to gauge how the person is feeling. Not able to talk is not the same as not able to listen. #socialcare service

Can AI and robots replace humans in caring for people with dementia? Personally, I'm doubtful as it appears to me that #socialcare is viewed by policy makers and researchers as a series of tasks that need to be done to, or for people who need support with personal care. It's much more than that. 1/

Homecare is most often delivered by independent providers who have been contracted by social services. This arrangement is inefficient and unsatisfactory, creating delays, miscommunication, and frustration for family carers. #socialcare needs a rethink to make it work for taxpayers and families.

How can we evaluate the effectiveness of homecare services? With considerable difficulty, I'd suggest. Keeping families at the centre of any evaluation must be part of the evaluation, but this is not at all easy to do. Family carers receiving a #socialcare service like homecare are busy and v tired.

Let's talk about those times when a family carer is ill with a bad cold or flu. Not so a GP appointment or hospital visit is needed, but really out of sorts & more support with caring for a partner with dementia would help. #socialcare provision in England is not flexible enough to step in. 1/

Very good article on #socialcare by James Tapper.

The big steps to arranging for #socialcare, the assessments of need & finance can take time. That is a problem if the delay is lengthy. Once a care package is in place, it's often the small things that cause the most irritation. Eg, changing the care rota at the last minute, not reading messages.

To see improvements in #socialcare, communications between the NHS, social services, care providers family carers, GPs & NGOs must get better. Managers in these organisations must be given specific duties to keep all interested parties & all relevant care staff up to date. It can be done.

The Programme for Government in Ireland contains this pledge:
"... to phase out the means test for carers over the next five years." Good to see carers are being given some recognition in my adopted country. The UK government could also choose to prioritise carers in this term. #socialcare

1. Any person, paid or unpaid, who care for someone with dementia deserves our tangible support. It's unfair that the state will place financial and emotional burdens on family members and won't recocognise the problems for care providers in recruiting and retaining good care staff. #socialcare

💙 To All Caregivers:

Days can be very hard. Especially showering and dressing in cases of dementia. Even if you don’t feel loving, what you’re doing is love in action. Your care makes a difference, even on the hardest days.

We can improve #socialcare by listening to carers. They don't have political clout, but they are a powerful lot, caring for family members day and night, doing a job virtually unrecognised and hardly supported by the state. Any support they do receive is hard fought for and given only begrudgingly.

Reviewing #socialcare must start with looking at the remaining clauses of the National Assistance Act 1948. Incredible that parts of a nearly 80 year old Act of Parliament are still in force, an Act that replaced the Poor Law and workhouses! There is much catching up to do #socialcare provision.

Good to see #socialcare being discussed on the BBCR4 news quiz. But keep in mind that some children and working age adults also receive social care. As a population we are mostly living longer, now we need public health measures to help us to live better quality and happier lives.

For years, they've been wiping the bottoms of the older people nobody else wanted to or could look after OR pay properly for.

QUICK! Get rid of them before they acquire any actual rights!

WhoTF writes shite like this and puts it out there with no shame? I would be mortified.
What a take! Care workers not only do an incredibly difficult and valuable job, but they do it for disgracefully low pay. THAT is the mistake which needs fixing - not their immigration status. ~AA

Discharge from hospital can be frightening for older people and their partners, if they have one. If discharged to their own home, they can be dealing with, for the first time, equipment never previously needed, and strangers coming into their house to carry out intimate personal care. #socialcare

There's a lot to digest in the social care announcement from Wes Streeting. Much thinking has been done and cash given to councils. The government now needs to tell the story of how people waiting for, or receiving a #socialcare service will see improvements very soon. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Good morning @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social Good to see that there are plans for reforming social care, but why another commission? Why take until 2028 to report? Have you forgotten about the Personal Care at Home Act 2010? Updating that legislation would be a better option for reforming #socialcare

Fabulous podcast from @quietriotpod.bsky.social with @sturdyalex.bsky.social talking to futurologist Richard Watson. A lesson for me is that we can shape the future and nurturing our young and planning for our ageing population will be important for all of us. We can plan for universal #socialcare

The National Care Forum survey of care providers found that without immediate government intervention:
• 73% will not provide care to people if asked by councils or the NHS
• 57% will end care contracts with councils or the NHS.
The government is condoning the rationing of #socialcare

The increase in admissions to hospital as a result of either flu or RSV reminds us of the need for prompt discharge of people well enough to go home, & in turn, timely assessment for socialcare for those needing support when they leave the ward. Investment in #socialcare matters for all of us.
