I’m thinking of Maggie Smith’s poem ‘Good Bones’ bc I’m hosting my daughter’s birthday party while thinking about today’s murder by ICE, & bc, while I engage my kids to protest injustice, I can’t tell them HOW much I have in common w/ the last 2 people ICE has shot & killed bc they worry about me.
The poem “Good Bones” by Maggie Smith Life is short, though I keep this from my children. Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways, a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative estimate, though I keep this from my children. For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird. For every loved child, a child broken, bagged, sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world is at least half terrible, and for every kind stranger, there is one who would break you, though I keep this from my children. I am trying to sell them the world. Any decent realtor, walking you through a real shithole, chirps on about good bones: This place could be beautiful, right? You could make this place beautiful.

The antidote to despair and hopelessness right now is to remember, like Samwise Gamgee said to Frodo, that "there is some good in this world and it's worth fighting for."

A moment of self-realisation for Arthur in today’s snip from my ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide’ #FanFic.

“What?” Over the course of his numerous travels, Arthur had come to realise he used that word an awful lot. Even Zaphod had once commented on it when mice wanted his brain. The problem was that it was a spectacularly useful word. It could impart his utter despair at the inherent senselessness of the events that seemed to occur around him with alarming regularity. It offered him a moment of thought after someone had said something particularly unintelligible at speeds that they probably thought were understandable, but were about as understandable as the minutes for a meeting that had happened six months before and the secretary had lost them, deciding to recreate them from a memory practically destroyed by far too many gin and tonics in the meantime. It was also useful for when Arthur heard and understood what was said, but hadn’t yet managed to formulate a meaningful response. “What?” He said again, just to give himself a moment to wake up.
