My ornithological journey began in Scotland nearly 40 years ago, volling in the Highlands in '84, then paid jobs (seabirds on Farnes 85, Orkney 86 etc) but the Highlands kept drawing me back. In 90/91 monitoring rare breeders inc Golden Eagle, divers, grebes, in Strathspey for @rspb.bsky.social 🦉

Almost all of my posts are some evidence or illustration of what @camwalker.bsky.social is describing in this thread. We are in the midst of a massive, rapid ecological breakdown that is all around us -- but most don't recognize it or care. But eventually, the chickens will come home to roost. 🌎
If you pay attention, ecological collapse is happening everywhere, in real time.

1/ Like here: Starved of water, taken down by insects, burned by repeated, abnormally intense wildfires, much of the ponderosa forest is turning into permanent grass & shrublands.

Another returning Irish White-tailed Eagle, 2024 release female 51, back on home soil after 6 months exploring Scotland, from Kintyre and north to Hoy, Orkney in late April. Also unusual was this bird never visited the west coast islands (esp Mull). She's back in Donegal safely! Beir bua:-)

No info on where this is in Co. Cork, but depressing to hear when almost every remaining scrap of native woodland is degraded from sheep, deer browsing, invasive etc as it is. What price our natural heritage?
