Today my wife, Chris, and I announced our retirement from professional journalism. In my case, 50 years at 10 newspapers and a half-dozen websites — the last dozen with Times of San Diego. It's been fun and rewarding (including six tonight at #jawards2025 of SD Press Club). Thx for tips and reading!
The dog was over 18, I hope.

Pagan existentialists have Mad magazine.
Most religions have their central texts. For christians it's the Bible, for muslims it's the Quran, for us atheists it's Batman comic books. They are all wide open to misinterpretation.

So now we know that Texas didn’t ban litter boxes in public schools (for students identifying as “furries”) thanks in part to Talarico. (He asked the bill’s author to document any schools with litter boxes for kids. The author came up empty.)
Trump’s propaganda czar Brendan Carr and Trump-controlled CBS refused to let Colbert air his interview with James Talarico. You can watch the interview here, and it already has 1.4M views. youtu.be/oiTJ7Pz_59A?...

At the 1996 Olympic track meet in Atlanta, Jesse Jackson (amid entourage) swept by my aisle seat to congratulate Michael Johnson after a gold-medal race. Jesse was only a couple feet away. My brush with a giant.
I don’t know who needs to hear Jesse Jackson leading the kids on Sesame Street in this beautiful call-and-response reminding them that every child is somebody, but here it is

Can AI find a parking space? That’s what reporters REALLY need.
“By removing writing from reporters’ workloads, we’ve effectively freed up an extra workday for them each week.”

Yikes.
“We plan to hire an AI rewrite specialist to ingest the reporting by Hannah and others and use AI to convert it into stories.”

The editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer said it will use AI to ‘write’ its articles.

But if Snoop tears his ACL while attempting to skate or ski, that’s OK.
Only thing I hate more than seeing snoop on The Olympics, is the split screen with commercials. Fucking wack

He ain’t “weird” for nothing! (And birds don’t actually exist.)
Did you know that strawberries are not berries, and are actually mammals?

Birch Aquarium during half-price month is a great place to get away from the news. I shot video, slo-mo and timelapse. youtu.be/inlqicYzDzg

This is all effed up. @sdpd.bsky.social has killed its press pass and parking placard program for news media. This idiotic action will severely cramp our ability to cover the news. City must reverse this edict. Now!

Unfree press
Who was actually invited to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference today? I was not invited, and I know of two other San Diego-based immigration and border reporters who were not invited. Really curious how they picked who was in that room...

I have mixed emotions about Facebook. So I didn't give great marks in this survey. (I like news from friends. Hate being mind-read on products and hobbies.)

Reporters (barely heard) begin asking questions at 12:25 into the Noem presser: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxSV...
Not every media outlet was allowed in. Inewsource — including San Diego Journalist of the Year Sofía Mejías-Pascoe — was kept out.

After learning that a writer friend of mine was in the #EpsteinFiles (for an email citing an article he wrote), I searched for my name. Sorry, not there. But I found 1,669 references to "San Diego" (over 167 screen pages).
