In 2016, Ontario passed legislation for the first week of November to be known as Treaties Recognition Week. This week was developed to highlight the importance of treaties and provide further education on treaty rights and relationships. This year, Queen’s University Archives was invited to participate in Treaties week events at Queen’s Park in the Lieutenant-Governor’s suite. In partnership with the Archives of Ontario, the Daniel George MacMartin Diary was on display for dignitaries and visitors alongside the original Treaty 9 document.

On the 10 hour drive from Sault Ste. Marie to Kingston, Ontario, I would say that High Falls Road is the most Tolkienesque sounding of the various highways and roads travelled. If only it were “High Falls Pass.”

Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked.

Voted! Polling officials at our advanced poll for the Canadian federal election said that all polls are reporting heavy turnouts. Normally in Canadian election it might take me about 15 minutes to get in, vote, and leave. It was more like 40 minutes today. #cdnpoli

If some want to create a dystopia controlled by a few, then it’s time for everyone else to choose a better future where no one is shamed or afraid to help one another.

Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. - Gandalf, The Last Debate

Gandalf did not move. And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the City, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of wizardry or war, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.

I'm constantly amazed by people who, when they see someone or some nation (including their own), being attacked or bullied think, "geez we/they must have really done something to deserve this." Maybe the bully is the problem because he or it is a bully.

It would not be a boon to Canadians, however, who value their own nation - warts and all - as much as Americans value theirs. Why do you assume everyone else wants to be you? We aren’t required to believe the things you tell yourselves to feel good.
