Lithe where Nathan was broad, golden-brown hair the precise shade of good whiskey Evan bought outside of Gilliard purview styled neatly even when he removed his straight-brimmed hat, Jensen Gilliard exhaled a line of smoke from his full-lipped mouth before removing his cigarette with his free hand. Despite the summer’s heat, present even before noon, neither his heather linen suit nor the fine amber-colored shirt he wore bore any signs of sweat or wear, as though he’d materialized out of thin air for the express purpose of causing Evan consternation. His eyes, strikingly green and direct, fixed on Evan without greeting, and when neither of them spoke Jensen arched one stately brow and blinked. “Looking to catch flies?” he asked, indicating Evan with the smoke held between long, delicate fingers. “Or—imitating a fish?”
