Now: Running Decoder @ The Verge. Earlier: editor/reporter for Protocol, Ars Technica, CQ Roll Call, Consumerist, and Kotaku; decades of other writing strewn across the internet. Boston-born, now DC-dwelling. She/her.
We just threw away my old, battered keyboard. It served me well for well over a decade but is toast. Not even really in donating condition.

So @macindc.bsky.social picked it up and looked at me and said: "Any last words?"

And I of course had to answer: "Press F to pay respects."

Because I am what I am, November/December/January are Dragon Age replay season. And again, because me, I take screenshots and play with photo mode and think too much about details.

And so, detail: What the heck is the thing on the right that looks like a tiny sweater??

12yo: WHAT THE HECK, did you just call me a 'stupidy-pants'??
7yo: No, I said you're ACTING like a stupidy-pants
12yo: ON CHRISTMAS?

Ah, the dulcet tones of a holiday morning.

In Discworld, Terry Pratchett invented the deity Anoia, goddess of Things Stuck in Drawers, and every single time I have to open the utensil drawer my children have filled with crazy straws, I am willing to admit I spare a small invocation to Anoia in my mind, that it will close again properly.

Probate is such a racket, it's *amazing* how much I've paid in filing fees alone (not even taxes) for inventory lists that amount to "one house, one car, nothing else of value"

Tooth Fairy Logistics LLC is having some *real* delivery pipeline problems in this house, as the 7yo stays up very late reading but the grown-ups are exhausted and need to go to bed early.

I do a LOT of different things at work; "producer" is at least 12 jobs in a trenchcoat and I never know what a day will hold.

The scariest thing I do every single year, however, is look Nilay dead in the eye on camera and make fun of his show to his face.

(Worth it.)
‘It’s all chaos and panic’
We turn the tables on Nilay and make him answer the questions on Decoder for once.

My kids now stay up later many nights than I do so I've been having to cram all the holiday gift wrapping in while they're at school (which also lets out too early) and it feels like I have an entire extra job this week because of it haha

I feel like this gap is where all the rancid vibes live. Who likes the feeling of distrusting and babysitting their own tools?
Wild stat from the CEO of Stack Overflow on Decoder this week -- 80 percent of its users use AI tools, but only 29 percent actually trust AI. This gap is the biggest story in AI, imo. Dug into it quite a bit www.theverge.com/podcast/8440...
Stack Overflow users don’t trust AI. They’re using it anyway

Our kids are 2nd grade and 7th grade and I'm really feeling this sudden dearth of new stuff for them.

(Elder kid is really enjoying taking her little brother though his first Steven Universe, Clone Wars, and A:TLA watches, though.)

The Rise And Fall of Queer Cartoons
Long before LibsofTikTok and Elon Musk called on parents to cancel Netflix, cartoons were already on the tail end of their queer renaissance.

One of our kids managed to bring home Flu A as an early Christmas present, what a year.

The first email warning folks to get ready for upcoming summer camp registrations came today.

Yes, for summer 2026.

Yes, today is December 11.

In case you ever wonder why parents of your acquaintance seem to be going slightly nuts...

A million times this, my kids both have *relatively* free rein on D+ but get *extremely* minimal, supervised YouTube and no TikTok
I'm sure Disney looks at YouTube and is envious of how much watchtime it has for kids. But I think there's a large amount of parents who think of the Disney+ app as a more premium product specifically because it is free of UGC. I know that a lot of parent were mad when Hulu stuff showed up on there

Today is your absolute last call, we're recording tomorrow! Ask Nilay anything!
Hey Bluesky! I'm off work this week to deal with some memorial stuff, but I'd love if when I went back to work next week the Decoder inbox was full of questions for @reckless.bsky.social to answer in our EOY special! decoder @ theverge dot com.

Obvs December is the season to find my inbox (and my postal mail box) full of pleas for donations and some I will give to if I can but I find the ones from *hospitals* that charged me or my late mother thousands of dollars for provided care to be the absolute most galling.

I have a bottle of Star Trek "romulan ale" that is actually bright blue rye. The only thing I can really mix it with is eggnog, so I drink it mostly in December. I joked to a friend this was blue milk.

"No," she said, "You made the Star Wars Christmas Special."

And I think it with every damn sip.

I spent Friday and Sunday in airports wrangling delayed flights and family travel and racked up several thousand steps in each one lolol, I don't think the airport needs *more* running around
Duffy on what he's doing to improve the airport experience for travelers: "Maybe I want a workout area where people might get some blood flowing doing some pull ups or step ups in the airport."

Two for two this weekend on flights delayed badly enough that they take off later than they were supposed to land 🙃

I am not a short person, especially for a woman, but sharing a bus with an entire college men's basketball team definitely, definitely made me feel smol lol

Ah, the future: where the airline's app can suddenly completely break randomly for me four hours before my flight boards

The total collapse of the media world I grew up with was slow and steady until it was all at once, and all at once is happening in 2025.

Could not find my phone for a solid 10 minutes this morning. Finally booted up my PC and went to Find My... .

I could not find my phone because it was under the cat. Thank you, Guybrush, for your contribution to my morning.
