Just spotted my first American robin of the 2026 season. Although there's not much food available for them in Nova Scotia as we are still covered in deep snow!

Stained glass window featuring the Waverley in the Lismore Bar on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow. This is one of a series of rather brilliant modern stained glass in this particular bar.

Went for a walk on Dartmoor yesterday & found these little water spouts bubbling up in a place that's bone dry in Spring & Summer. Today, an ecologist has explained to me these are 'ephemeral springs': where the bedrock on Dartmoor is impermeable granite, the water can't sink past the bedrock.

457 UK armed forces personnel died in Afghanistan during the 20-year deployment.
This is a fucking hideous thing to say. Even by his non-existent standards.
Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

We found three cars full of masked ICE agents in a residential car park. Our guide asked them if they had a warrant, they refused to answer. I asked them several questions about what they were doing. They then made obscene gestures at us. Shortly afterwards, a drone appeared circling our car.

Deeply weird and menacing scenes in Minneapolis. ICE agents sat in masks and balaclavas in unmarked, often blacked out cars, watching local residents. They themselves being observed by a network of locals, trying to deter them from mounting raids. Profoundly abnormal.

It’s World Snow Day! ❄️ Snow may be rare in Cornwall, but our archives are full of wonderful winter scenes. We love this 1969 colour transparency of miners’ cottages along Stippy Stappy, St Agnes. #worldsnowday began in 2012 to inspire people to enjoy and explore the magic of snow.

Looking back to last Spring. Clearing up the garden today after Storm Goretti. Last year resolved to keep these Primula Vialii in a pot to save replacing them each year, but they have completely disappeared again, just turned to dust. More on order yet again.
