I love this essay—and yes, there’s milkweed in Illinois, but not as much as when I was a child due to herbicides, alas.

This is from a poem by Andrew Lang called “Ballade of the Midnight Forest” and I now recognize that my true childhood ambition was to be a 19th century Scottish poet and folklorist (and also a wood nymph of course).
