A new report finds the bottom 60% of U.S. households—or *two-thirds* of the population—can't afford a “minimal quality of life": housing, health care, and other necessities.

"Indicators like GDP and unemployment tell us the economy is thriving. But they don’t reflect the reality of most Americans."

The stories in this book are so familiar. Families staying in extended stay motels. Families unable to enter shelters because they have an adolescent son. Families navigating the “best” way to shelter in their vehicle. I needed this reminder of my why. Thanks @brian-goldstone.bsky.social

In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

Hey social work educators who teach policy courses!! I’m looking for readings about policy advocacy - what it is, why we do it (intro/BSW-level). I’ve found some great articles from the early 2000s but feel like I must be missing more recent articles…

This is not an exaggeration: illegally gutting this program will cause Americans to freeze to death in their homes.

What Dr. Kushel said 👇🏻 If there isn’t enough housing, where do we expect people to go? No state has an adequate supply of affordable housing. And my home state of NV rounding out the bottom with just 17 units per 100 extremely low-income households.
The US has only 35 units of housing affordable & available per 100 extremely low-income households. CA has 24. This is why we have the homelessness crisis we do.
The @nlihc.bsky.social #TheGap2025 report out today.

Me, a public health person, just sitting over here reflecting on the fact that the US has experienced a 7% increase in infant mortality post-Dobbs.

Like, do you realize what that says about this society from an ethical perspective? That we made policy choices that caused this?

“If ‘I think, therefore I am’ is true, we are people who are. We are, and we stand on this ground. If you deny us ground, you are denying us our ‘I am.’ Isn’t that negation of our existence? We are here and we are you and we are yours.”

This! Last week my hometown (Reno/Washoe County) voted to stop a 30-year-old expansion tax that funds public libraries which will lead to losing 23 staff, $1.4 million in the book budget, and $200,000 in technology.
Just a reminder to support your local public libraries! Write letters of support. Use the library often & in many different ways. Show up to meetings.

Library staff have been begging for help, advocacy, and action for years. Please show up for libraries.

People experiencing vehicle homelessness make up the majority of the unhoused population in many communities. Safe parking lots offer a safe, legal place to park, but as the Colorado Safe Parking Initiative shares, they are only able to serve 10-20% of people who contact them.
