Big new one from me and @ibogost.bsky.social: DOGE has hovered up unprecedented amounts of government data and is pooling it. What can they do with it? They can actualize the surveillance state in ways that were previously unthinkable. An American Panopticon www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

Highly recommend!
In the latest episode of our podcast, Justified Posteriors, we discuss whether interest rates should rise in anticipation of AGI (as predicted by @basilhalperin.com). Our priors are quite different! Do check it out.

The part of Dune the movies mostly cut out was that “thinking machines” i.e., AI were made illegal because of the massive conflict between them and humans in the past.

"Free" college only works if it achieves the learning outcomes. Few existing college programs do that.

A highly subsidized IIT-like or CalTech for all who qualify for entry, I could get behind.
I think this is true, but conditional on designing the free college program to expand overall access rather than just redistribute it. Something like tying the subsidies to colleges creating more capacity.
It’s good policy for Democrats to advocate for free college, both because it’s the right thing to do and because it makes more Democrats

If DOGE only focuses on the cost side of efficiency, it will be a lost opportunity.

Cutting costs is way easier than delivering outcomes.

The goal should be to achieve high-quality outcomes at an acceptable cost.

Bluesky is a public benefit corp with the mission “to develop and drive large-scale adoption of technologies for open and decentralized public conversation.”

The PBC status allows us to pursue our mission above profit, but we still need to make this open ecosystem sustainable.
