It pains my father’s heart to see war & death, esp. in Europe again today, this time started by the successor state of 1 of the allied liberators of Germany.
If we don‘t learn from our collective history, then we are doomed to repeat it.

Thanks to the German surrender & to the kindness of an unknown Soviet soldier my father was liberated from his doomed fate to live a long, happy & prosperous life in freedom & in peace.

Weakened & malnourished, my father became severely ill. As he was withering away, an „Asian-looking“ Soviet soldier shared his compressed bread with him. This humane gesture by an „enemy“ gave my father enough strength to recover & survive.

In the chaos that followed, my father became a prisoner of war of the Soviet army for 3 months. Under hard labor these 15 year old boys had to build their own prisoner of war camp.

On 8 May an older German soldier took my father‘s rifle, smashed it on a rock & handed the perplexed boy a Soviet flyer in German (see below - which he kept) which proclaimed Germany‘s surrender. The impending death sentence was gone, but the dangers were not over.

12 days before the end of the war, at age 15(!), my father’s class was drafted into the army for improvised rudimentary „military training“ & armed. The boys were meant to fight & hold back the rapidly advancing, battle-experienced Soviet Army, which would have undoubtedly sent them to their death!

80 yrs ago, 8.05.1945, the German army surrendered, ending WW2 in Europe & the Nazi regime.
If it hadn’t been for the surrender, I most likely wouldn’t be here!
My father (95) was 15 then (2nd row in mid). He‘d been taken with his class at 10 from their homes in Berlin & was in what is now Czechia.

80 yrs ago, 8.05.1945, the German army surrendered, ending WW2 in Europe & the Nazi regime.
If it hadn’t been for the surrender, I most likely wouldn’t be here!

Sham peace deals will not last and will not make the world a safer place. They only help Putin. No agreement can be negotiated without Ukraine at the table. It is good that both #UNGA resolutions now clearly distinguish between the aggressor and the victim. 3/3
