On 8 May an older German soldier took my father‘s rifle, smashed it on a rock & handed the perplexed boy a Soviet flyer in German (see below - which he kept) which proclaimed Germany‘s surrender. The impending death sentence was gone, but the dangers were not over.

80 yrs ago, 8.05.1945, the German army surrendered, ending WW2 in Europe & the Nazi regime.
If it hadn’t been for the surrender, I most likely wouldn’t be here!

My father (95) was 15 then (2nd row in mid). He‘d been taken with his class at 10 from their homes in Berlin & was in what is now Czechia.

„Deutsche Sprache, schwere Sprache!“, but it‘s still worth learning German!🇩🇪
These 24 Nicaraguans have mastered it & received their diplomas today which enable them to take up studies at German universities after graduation!🇩🇪🧑‍🎓👏
