In 2011, I wrote my MA thesis on EU's energy policy and focused particularly on the Baltic States. At the time, they were widely referred to as an "energy island" within the EU. Old Soviet connections kept them tethered to Russia. 1/2

On the event of Prince Edward visiting Estonia tomorrow, it's a good moment to recall how the Estonian royalist party asked him to become the King of Estonia:

Britain’s Prince Edward was asked to become the king of Estonia
In 1994, the Estonian Royalist Party sent a letter to Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom, requesting permission to crown her youngest son, Prince Edward, as Estonia’s monarch.

If you think genocide, torture and rape are bad, you are "Russophobic".

🤔
A list of top UK politicians were banned from entering Russia today, as Moscow continued its tit-for-tat diplomatic feud with London and accused senior Labour figures of “Russophobic” leanings.

Having had the job of protecting a country from Russian cyber attacks, I can say with all certainty that if Russia could turn all our power off, they would have done it already.

The West is good at protecting itself but there is no room for complacency.
Don’t know which department pre-briefed this speech by Pat Macfadden but top lines are back to old days of cyber hysteria, crossing the line from encouraging preparedness to doing Russia’s job for it by painting UK power grid and CNI as defenceless. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

Russia gave the RS-26 a range /just/ inside the technical definition of an ICBM so they could claim it didn't infringe the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. It is effectively, however, an Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile, or IRBM.

Russia just calls it an ICBM because it's more scary.
Russia’s use of an ICBM armed with a conventional warhead against #Ukraine is a tepid attempt to inspire fear in the west. The only thing it should inspire is increased western support for Ukrainian air defense and long-range missile strikes against Russia.

Must-read thread by @gresselgustav.bsky.social - rightly trying to stem 'WW3' panic in some Western circles. Putin wants to intimidate the West; he doesn't want to end up provoking it. So far Biden, Scholz, & Trump advisers like Donald Jr have done a great job of ensuring Putin's efforts succeed.

On the supposed #ICBM launch, and the "escalation panic" ➡️ this is exactly what Moscow wanted to achieve. But is it justified?

US & Russia have agreement to notify each other of ICBM launches. Raises the question of whether Russia notified the US of RS-26 use & if that's why embassy was closed, or simply that US picked up - likely intentional? - signs of Russian preparations.

ICBM use serves one strategic goal for Russia - to provoke responses from opposition parties in the West (the likes of Corbyn who are happy to sacrifice Eastern European lives for some perceived notion of "peace").

The only way to stop the circle of escalation is for Russia to lose and withdraw.
First ever combat ICBM use in history. Make no mistake, Russia is escalating this war even further.
Russia is reported to have fired an ICBM at democratic Ukraine for the first time. A strong Western response would include more military aid to Ukraine and stronger sanctions on fascist Russia. A weak response will invite more aggression from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian media say that overnight Russia targeted Ukraine with an RS-26 intercontinental ballistic missile launched from its Astrakhan region, a Kinzhal aeroballistic missile from a MiG-31K, and 7 Kh-101 cruise missiles from Tu-9 strategic bombers. Attack focused on Dnipro.

Once is an accident, twice..?
If I had a nickel for every time a Chinese ship was dragging its anchor on the bottom of the Baltic Sea in the vicinity of important cables I would have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice.

At risk because of who, Vladimir?
Cable cutting in the news! I've written on this a few times. My first piece was in October 2022. The previous month Nord Stream pipelines were blown up—probably by Ukraine. In Jan the chief of defence staff noted "phenomenal" increase in Russian undersea activity. www.economist.com/internationa...

Ukraine defends itself, and somehow they are a accused of escalating?

One thing is clear - Russia will not stop until it is stopped. And we should be grateful to Ukraine for doing it.

The EU agreed on a common position on how international law applies in cyberspace. It's important, inter alia, because the EU’s response to Russian aggression should include decisive action in cyberspace. This is a solid step in the right direction.

Russia indiscriminately killing civilians in broad daylight.

How can we not agree that this has to stop? No amount of nice phone calls makes this go away, only strength and weapons.
Open massacre of civilians on the streets of Odesa at this hour as Russians sent ballistic missiles loaded with cluster munitions warheads into the heavily populated city center.
