We need to return to Zhou-era combat, where chariot-riding elites engaged in elaborate ritualistic forms of combat where the infantry would not be allowed to touch them, while the infantry mainly just exist to take up space.

Like with anything by Namhee Lee it’s something I will always recommend especially if you want to get into the 90s and the wider “Three Kims” era of Korean history but it wouldn’t be my suggestion as an entry point Namhee Lee basically expects you to be familiar with Korea prior to 87.
this book by Namhee Lee (have not read) I think gets into this shift, but my favorite depiction of this disillusionment setting in is in Hwang Sok-yong's THE OLD GARDEN: what do you do after you fought and took down the dictatorship but the people simply wants to move on and make money

perhaps this is a step in direction for Catholic dioceses in the US to mirror the more activism-centered history in South Korea and play a bigger role. Myeongdong Cathedral, where Archdiocese of Seoul sits, was the "Mecca" of pro-democracy activism in the 70s and 80s despite heavy crackdowns
Good statement from the US conference of Catholic Bishops

i feel like "the modern concept of race wasn't invented until the enlightenment" and "pre-enlightenment societies didn't have racism" are two very different claims. pre-modern conceptions had a lot more to do with religion

By the Late Middle Ages/Early Modern Renassiance, the conception of humanity as three races, descendants of each sons of Noah, was common.
Cigarettes falling off a cliff in the U.S. due to the 80s and 90s directly increased the prices of literally everything in retail as cigarettes where no longer able to supplement the logistic cost for wholesalers and retailers
Used to be over 2K wholesalers dedicated to candy and tobacco with the master settlement their now only 200 now. The C-store market almost entirely self imploded with Casey’s being forced to heavily invest in pizza and donuts to even remain afloat

The master settlement, STARS, Black Monday, wholesaler genocide and the carton scandal all downstream of the fall of big tobacco.
