A #sabbatical is now viewed as a life support for a research career amongst #academics, who are doing multiple roles they're not trained for, at the expense of the one role they are.

My next @demrescommunity blog ⬇️
From endless admin to lab work and writing again @kamarameenali.bsky.social reflects on what taking a sabbatical really means in modern academia.

As course leader, it's been a stressful wait, but pleased to see our Biomedical Science course RETAIN 2nd place in the Guardian University Guide 2026!

There's been many challenges over the past 12 months so this is a great achievement for the team! 🎉

This is disappointing! The North-East produces exceptional research! I’ve had the privilege of working alongside world leaders in Lewy body dementia at Newcastle University. Transparency as to how these institutions were selected is definately needed!
The Global Talent Fund excludes the North—despite our world-class institutions.

I’ve asked the Science Minister why no region north of Birmingham was prioritised and why the selection process he set out to me wasn't evidence, geography or policy based: committees.parliament.uk/committee/13...

#Dementia is a leading cause of death for women, and we're more likely to care for people with dementia.

Despite being disproportionately affected, female researchers are less likely to get funded/promoted. My @dementiaresearcher.bsky.social blog ⬇️

Found this little hoglet stranded in a car park - lying on the concrete in the heat, no sign of its mum. Managed to get him admitted to a #hedgehog rescue late last night.

Remember - #hedgehogs shouldn't be out in the daytime, so get help/advice from your local rescue 🦔

So happy to see Dr Zoë Bell graduate last week after completing her PhD! 🎉

And congratulations to my first cohort of BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science students who also graduated! 👩🏻‍🎓

Excited to see what you all do next! 🔬

The research funding process in #academia is highly subjective, decisions are vulnerable to bias, and the process may be actively encouraging bad practice.

In this @dementiaresearcher.bsky.social blog, I explain why it needs reforming. ⬇️

Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali - Blog – Does the research funding process need reforming?

"We talk a lot about diversity and inclusion, but we rarely connect it to the structure of academic labour. You can’t diversify the pipeline if your pipes are corroded by years of neglect and complacency."

Is the rapid and widespread use of #GenAI a risk to academic integrity, potentially deskilling future scientists?

Or can it enable creativity and improve efficiency?

In this @dementiaresearcher.bsky.social blog, I ask if GenAI is a friend or foe.
