Well guess I will be deleting my Academia account here this week.
This is my PhD thesis

I did not ask for this

I did not consent to this

I did not approve of this

I was not compensated for this

I would not have advised this

I do not like this

And worst of all, the number of people who've read my thesis has still not increased.

I love when I find left readings in lecture rooms. Me replying to the empty room, “why yes I would like to read this. Thank you so much for thinking of me.”

If you were teaching a class on AI/GenAI and how the technologies deepen environmental racism, what articles and other resources would you include? I'll start with some in a short 🧵 and I invite you to add your own. #EduSky

Had someone spew this at me yesterday. It’s such a lack of acknowledgment (ignorance) to how LLMs like ChatGPT work. They aren’t comparable. Calculators do maths you could physically do. LLMs spews out information based on a prediction algorithm, ie what it “thinks” you want to know.
People keep comparing ChatGPT to a calculator to me and like even if it were that simple of a comparison you still need to learn math. You still need to be able to count and do arithmetic before you rely on the calculator. And you should be able to do easy math in your head and by hand

I get asked a lot during talks at universities how to integrate LLMs into the classroom "ethically". And the more I think about it, the more I'm affirmed the answer is "don't".

This piece by @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social and Christopher Nygren on AI provides some excellent arguments as to why.

Been thinking about this a lot myself in relation to navigating my relationship with my conservative parents during this time.
I’ve interviewed a lot of victims stayed in an abusive relationship because they worried their loved ones would judge them for not leaving sooner. They needed support and they knew they would get ridicule instead.

And that’s something I’m thinking about a lot in this political environment.

I haven’t been a great reader since the PhD, but one thing that’s really brought it back for me is Childrens / Young adult fict. Started with reading prep for my Studies of Childhood class and has now turned into rereading books that made me fall in love with reading. Will post some favs below.

Utterly unsurprisingly, the universal provision of free school meals across London has delivered benefits across the board, with positive effects on family finances, children's and parents' mental health and children's learning. Long may it continue! 👏👏

Update. Activity was one of my favs thus far for my Studies of Childhood class. SO many good conversations came out of this creation project and the reflective sharing afterwards. Will be using this again for next year.

Went MIA as my parents are currently in town. Teaching today is my joyful little escape. It’s also the last “content” driven day for my undergrad class, and I’m pretty stoked about the activity I have planned. Will hopefully remember to post an update later 😊

This is what I strive for. The more we talk about teacher well being and advocate for better working conditions, the more we support the students in front of them.
One of the central jobs of everyone who works in education but is not a classroom teacher should be ensuring classroom teachers have enough (time, energy, knowledge, training, resources).

If you nurture and value teachers, you nurture and value the children in front of them.

The March girls all voted Harris with Marmee leading the pack. Laurie voted Harris but only because Jo would have been disappointed if he hadn’t. Mr. Laurence talked about Tr*ump but voted Harris in secret.
Name a fictional character and who you think they voted for in the 2024 election.

Buzz Lightyear voted for Harris. Reluctantly, because he’s conservative, but he’s a ‘preserve the constitution’ kinda guy who was put off by 1/6.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what productive collectivism and “pushing back” looks like in education spaces these days. I feel as though my work position gets more precarious on a daily basis and thus this has become a daily tension/struggle. What are y’all’s thoughts? #EduSky

Resistance is woven through the words of abolitionism and feminism and anti-fascism. Read the history and the literature.
