Currently playing - Spelunky
Spelunky breaks that for me with its emergent gameplay and sense of progression. Nearly every run feels like it has a different story.
Best roguelike I’ve ever played. Although the pool is small.
✅ Tight, precise controls
✅ Extremely difficult, but almost always fair
✅ Emergent gameplay keeps runs from feeling too samey
✅ Satisfying progression of your own ability
❌ Could use a larger variety of items
❌ Not a ton of in-game motivation for exploring secret routes
9 / 10

Looks absolutely phenomenal 👀
Switch 2 had the biggest console launch *ever*. But that’s mostly from the Nintendo loyal base and bigger gaming enthusiasts. Now that those people have the console, idk if more casual consumers will find much worth in it yet.
A 'senior Nintendo employee' attributed the dip to a “complicated economic landscape”, higher prices, and “the absence of a major Western game”.

✅ Beautiful pixel art presentation
✅ Some truly ingenious puzzle design
✅ Shifting perspectives stays consistently mesmerizing
❌ Some of the deeper puzzles are too complex or gimmicky
❌ Backtracking can get confusing

But having a hard time finding more than just the same 5 or so games. Is the pool of games like this really that small? 😭

It was a great year of gaming for me!

✅ Intuitive environmental level design
✅ New Pikmin variations are great
✅ Creatively charming all-around
✅ QoL additions polish the formula
❌ Stockpiling juice becomes trivial quickly
❌ Collectibles aren’t as fun as in prior Pikmin games
❌ Final mission is a bit annoying

✅ Proximity chat encounters are consistently unpredictable
✅ Arc AI is impressive
✅ Audio design is top notch
✅ Gorgeous, well-designed maps
❌ Gameplay loop isn’t satisfying enough
❌ Lacking meaningful sense of progression
❌ Inventory management between runs gets very tedious

It’s literally just the anime aesthetic. That’s it.
TLDR It feels like many of the JRPGs I’ve loved before but everyone likes it because it isn’t anime

However, I thought Highguard looked painfully generic and bland. The game looking boring is what made it a bad closer to me. Not that it was a free-to-play hero shooter.

✅ Immaculate aesthetic
✅ Weird in a great way
✅ Skating is technical and satisfying
✅ Vibey OST
❌ Task structure could’ve used more creativity
