I sometimes use a chinese keyboard or a spanish one, I sometimes use a VPN on my phone, and my device used to be set to Hindi and Chinese (in an attempt to learn the languages). I travel a lot.

i am a locale-estimator's worst nightmare
speaking from experience building safety features and trying to roll them out in specific regions: it's really fucking hard

companies have different ways of figuring out where users are and then there's the confusing experience of people traveling. I'm not saying it's the right thing, but it's hard

because it is really goddamn notable that none of the big companies were bothering with age verification like this UNTIL these laws started being passed! like, this isn't something they *want* to deal with the complexity of if they don't need to! it's extra work!

This week Section 230 turned 30, and you'll see a bunch of posts on Techdirt today and the rest of the week about the importance of Section 230, but my first contribution this week is how the arguments against 230 are so contradictory that it should give everyone pause to consider why.

I am so fucking angry about age verification, but I'm furious w/ the global moral panic that is providing cover for LEGISLATING THIS ANTI-PRIVACY FUCKSHIT INTO LAW, not with the companies going "jfc we cannot keep dealing w/ policy and technical work of addressing the patchwork of states/countries"!

seeing a lot of ✨ discourse ✨

legislation around the world has been moving towards age checks, and they're far from alone in adding these checks for certain features. It's similar to what Bluesky does where certain features require age checks.

As LLMs become more central to T&S workflows, our new brief offers practical guidance for engineers & practitioners on improving multilingual moderation and reducing inequities across language communities.
Read the full brief:
Better Global Tools, Better Global Communities: Recommendations for Trust & Safety Teams When Building and Procuring Multilingual Tools
Research has shown that automated Trust & Safety (T&S) tools often fall short in languages other than English. As part of research conducted by CDT to understand the challenges of moderating low resource but widely-spoken languages, we convened four roundtables made up of AI experts and data annotators between April 2024 and March 2025 to […]

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
