As Zohran Mamdani takes over as mayor of New York City, he joins his new Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice, Julie Su, to talk about building an economy that works for the many — not just a select few.

Through the Rental Ripoff hearings, City Hall will not only be listening, we will take action to ensure that the law is followed without exception and that New Yorkers know their rights when it comes to the often hidden or deceptive fees associated with the hunt for housing.

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social's vision is an NYC where economic growth & economic justice go hand in hand. That’s only a radical notion because we’ve become so accustomed to economic injustice as the norm.

Doesn’t get better than working with @linamkhan.bsky.social & @saalevine.bsky.social again!
Happy New Year! Zohran Mamdani is the mayor of New York City, and some of his most high-profile aides were among the most effective members of the Biden administration.
I talked to them about their plans for this, the first story at @prospect.org for 2026:

If the US invested in child care and had national policies like paid leave comparable to other industrialized countries, we would generate $775 billion of economic activity a year. The question should not be, “how can we afford to do this?” The question is, “how can we afford not to?” Let’s do this.
Most New Yorkers can’t afford childcare.

@unitehere.org look forward to working with you to make sure one job is enough in NYC 💪🏼

I might start drinking coffee just so I can go somewhere besides Starbucks.
We are stronger TOGETHER. ✊ SAG-AFTRA President #SeanAstin & many #SagAftraMembers SHOWED UP in solidarity for @sbworkersunited.org baristas who are on ULP strike. We support them in their fight for a fair contract & an end to union-busting. #NoContractNoCoffee

Pablo Alvarado: “…we need to build solidarity, love & power from the bottom up.” Yes we do.

ImmDefenders: “…we’re made for this moment.” Yes we are.

Please give if you can. #GivingTuesday

Why can’t working families afford to live? Because companies like Amazon pay millions to ensure they can keep paying poverty wages to their workers. @dschneider.bsky.social, @profsheenalives.bsky.social, Kevin Bruey & I document how poor the conditions for Amazon delivery drivers are.

Starbucks workers deserve a first contract.

Companies delay “to punish workers for unionizing, to undermine the effort, or to send a message that there is no benefit to joining a union because nothing changes at work for years. Usually all of the above. This is unacceptable.”

This Thanksgiving is the first I’ve spent in LA in a few years. As the daughter of immigrants, I’ve always felt that it’s people who make a place home.

On the biggest shopping day of the year, and as we head into the holiday shopping season, I’m thinking of the many workers who power Amazon, especially workers in warehouses who sort & move goods and drivers who deliver them who are struggling to get by.

What a year. Amidst chaos and cruelty, the clearest thing that came through from Selma to San Francisco, Amherst to Atlanta, New York to New Orleans, in Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Dallas, my home base of DC for 4 years and beyond, I’m incredibly grateful to have friends everywhere. #thanksgiving #grateful

Kent Wong was uniquely able to bring both humility and grandeur, to mix authenticity with majesty…at events, in organizing campaigns, and in life. Because of him, we know what we need to do, even though it hurts. juliesulabor.substack.com/p/kent-wong-...

What a cruel, sick joke DOGE was. It took a chainsaw to people’s lives, cut services, killed jobs, and had to lie about how much money it saved. Now it’s over but the harm it caused isn’t.
“When this administration and Elon Musk talk about ‘efficiency,’ we should remember: workers die in the name of efficiency.”

Affordability isn’t about a race to the bottom for cheap stuff and cheap labor. It’s about shared responsibility, corporate accountability, public investments in public goods, strong unions & workers with power, and jobs with dignity, security, and meaning.

Que gusto verte en Los Angeles, @yolandadiaz.bsky.social! With Labour Minister Diaz, we strengthened international efforts to combat worker abuse & misclassification, and addressed threats to worker safety that have no borders like heat and consolidation of power by multinational corporations.

What an honor to do the first public talk at the James Lawson Jr. Worker Justice Center, the house that Kent Wong built, alongside the extraordinary Saba Waheed, the exact leader we need for the UCLA Labor Center.
On Tuesday, labor advocates and community members joined UCLA Labor Center director Saba Waheed in a conversation with former US Secretary of Labor Julie Su. 🔥

This timely discussion marks the first public talk held at the newly renovated James Lawson Worker Justice Center.

Atlanta is showing that at a time of relentless attacks by our own federal government on our nation’s cities, the workers, unions, mayors, and community leaders in Georgia continue to hold the line and even to advance it.
