Through a U.S. joint venture with the Oneida Nation, Edmonton's Stantec had contracts to do facilities inspections at ICE detention sites.

The deals, done in late 2025, broke up when the Oneida Nation government found out what its business arm was up to.

In December, the Canadian government gave $1 million to Ottawa's JSI Telecom to commercialize AI-driven data analytics.

JSI, a wiretaps and investigation support firm, had a banner year in U.S. government sales in 2025, including a big new contract with ICE.

The Canadian gov has "no intention" of repealing or changing the Online News Act despite U.S. pressure. Even so, officials have been talking to Meta about potentially bringing news back to its platforms, sources said.
