Impermanent, I begged the above for his sweet mother love, the pelican that bent its neck to open the fount of pure blood from its very own breast but he sent to me this to figure instead and there I began my lifelong work—rook di goo rook di goo said a couple of dirty pigeons in a hazel tree.

I’ve done group sonnets with my intro poetry classes for years, but just did a group ghazal for the first time & it was a lot of fun. Just decide on the radif (repeated word) & the qafiyah (rhyming sound) at the beginning (the students chose both). Here’s the one we did last week!
Home All my life, I’ve been out here in the wind, looking for home. Walking the same long road, hoping to find my only home. From the nest of her mother, left all alone, she takes her first flight, but wants to go home. There’s something nice about it,  about the quiet, when you come to know home. Observing all things like a polar bear slowly wandering through all this deep snow. Home.  Struggling like a lost cat, searching for comfort, only filled by the idea of having no home.  I hear train whistles in my backyard, they still scare me. My new closet, dusted with old clothes from home. I want him to hold me. I want to go home. My body, my former enemy. Now a place where I glow. Home.  Tell me when the sun sets below the skyline. I’ll watch for swifts, alone, from home.  We the poets which expand and disperse march alone, until at last, we yearn to go home.
