Philly, Rochester, Charleston, and Delaware. Four very different locations, but with one thing in common: taking specific and effective steps to help tenants avoid evictions.
In Phoenix, there are 14 eviction filings for every 100 renting households. In Philadelphia, it’s just 4 eviction filings.

These differences are not uncommon, and many times, are a sign of effective policies. These are four cases that are promoting housing stability: evictionlab.org/how-local-le...

4 out of every 10 people who receive an eviction filing are children.

This research by Peter Hepburn, Danny Grubbs-Donovan, @ngraetz.bsky.social, Olivia Jin and Matthew Desmond highlights the damage that an eviction inflicts in their education.

The "you have the right to an attorney" phrase we hear in movies is not true for most people facing homelessness in the United States. During an eviction, tenants face a hearing alone, while landlords have lawyers with them. Some cities are trying to change that and level the playing field.
New Study 🔔:

More than 7M Americans face eviction each year. But if they go to court, most do it alone, without a lawyer.

Our researchers studied the initiatives that are trying to change this reality, known as Right to Counsel programs or RTC.
