I just can't imagine ever *not* reading entire books with kids.

Part of the goal of English class is to fall in love with reading. How do you do that without reading the whole book?

Perfect illustration of the difference between "schooling" and learning. Learning is rooted in experiences. Schooling is about discrete tasks to pass an assessment. Students are starved for experiences. We should give them to them.
The alliance between the media + corporate education interests have reduced reading to a technical decoding exercise rather than opportunities for meaning making + engagement with the natural + social world.

Schools (+ many teachers, sadly) have followed this agenda much organized resistance.
Over the last two decades I have seen reading for all intents and purposes disappear … I haven’t seen an ELA teacher take their kids to the school library in over a decade … all while the number of kids requiring intensive reading class rises. So much focus on test scores and none on reading

my main thought on this is that yes it’s true & also, literacy rates connect directly to the lack of media literacy we are currently seeing in much of our country’s population. Comprehension is such an important part of being able to read!!
Just thought of this and it is happening

Currently developing a math skills assessment for a second grader in Maryland. I have 1:1 correspondence, number sense, parts and wholes, place value, skip counting, fact fluency, word problems and word problems with money, telling time, and shapes. What other skills should I be assessing? #EduSky

DCU’s Dr Alan Gorman says teacher bashing is happening everywhere, and it suits the political and corporate class to scapegoat the profession.

The amount of educators who feel stifled by the system is overwhelming. If you ever feel the courage to speak up for what is right, know that I’ve got your back. #EDUsky
I’m a very vocal educator. I speak up when I feel things aren’t equitable, I call BS when I see it, I advocate for what is right, I lead by what is best for ALL including teachers. Because of these things, I always feel like a 🎯 is on my back & I’m always fighting to be heard.
