That plot on real exports is brutal. Like a live view of the ECB going through the five stages of grief over the death of export-led growth. Seems we're one projection away from acceptance.
Interesting figures from Philip Lane. The constant downward revision to real exports is quite telling.

Today, in Berlin's demonstration against the genocide in Gaza, someone hung a banner reading "long live Israel" with an antifascist logo in it. Such an insult to a symbol of antifascist resistance could only happen in Germany.

Excited to share that I’m starting a PhD at FU Berlin in the EQUALFIN program, funded by the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung! My research will focus on shifts in the IMFS, such as changing dynamics between the dollar and oil prices. If you’re in Berlin and/or working on related topics, I’d love to connect.

Given Trump’s current attacks on the Fed, we should not fall back on defending the policy regime that is partly responsible for the current state of affairs. It is imperative to push our own progressive project. Worth reading @adamtooze.bsky.social here:

The next step is for these companies to start posting their bitcoins as collateral to borrow short-term in the money markets, in order to fund the purchase of more bitcoins and further boost their share prices. If we're going to have a financial crisis, I want it to be as dumb as possible.

But when US leadership becomes unpredictable, this creates serious risks for financial stability.

It’s time for Europe to urgently de-dollarise our economy.
