Listening to American podcasters talking about Emerald Fennell misunderstanding ‘Withering’ Heights.

Finished Small Prophets last night. Everyone loves it and rightly so. I loved it too. Mackenzie Crook seems to have an uncanny ability to create a tone and a gentle humanity that makes you feel better for having watched his shows. No bigger praise.

Slightly too incessant in its talkativeness. A good film that would have been made better by Woody Allen. Somehow the wit didn’t land as it might have done. Hawke is very good but his acting was a little bit too noticeable.

Reading The Wager by David Gramm tonight and, if nothing else, it will teach me to eat fruits and vegetables. Scurvy sounds like hell on earth.

I'm not talking about dance lessons. I'm talking about putting a brick through the other guy's windshield. I'm talking about taking it out and chopping it up.

Less a cogent documentary on 70s films than a bunch of things randomly thrown at the screen.

Watched Hickey and Boggs. About as nihilistic a film as I’ve ever seen. Classic 70s. Really liked it.

First film I’ve watched by Jafar Panahi and I was very impressed by the humanity at the heart of a story about the brutality of Iranian authoritarianism. The characters really shine and broaden this justifiable polemic into, at times, a celebration of people in the toughest of circumstances.

I do enjoy listening to what cultural references the Libero podcast will utilise in their football conversation. Today: Pluribus and Kazuo Ishiguro.

Watched Roofman last night. So strange that so may reviewers seem to dislike the dissonance between the superficial charm of Manchester with the stupid immorality of his actions. It’s the driver of the film: the film is funny and lively but also sad and packed with pathos. A character study.

After realising my most watched director in 2025 was Woody Allen, the next film on my watchlist is a 1972 Walter Hill starring Bill Cosby.

Honestly, I should be thrown off Bluesky immediately. 😂

Read Benbecula: the first piece of fiction in the New Year. Perfect in its way: short and perfectly realised. An unreliable narrator who, in his narrow way, conjures up a lot of insights into island life, mental illness and moral philosophy.
