The Arthur Holmes Medal is one of the three equally ranked most prestigious awards made annually by the European Geosciences Union. The award is made to scientists who have “achieved exceptional international standing in solid Earth geosciences, defined in their widest senses, for their merit and their scientific achievements”. The award is named after British geologist Arthur Holmes, who is known for his work on radiometric dating and mantle convection.

Vanavond wordt in de Portugese Synagoge de Kristallnacht herdacht, de nacht dat in Duitsland Joodse instellingen werden belaagd en tientallen Joden werden vermoord. Voorafgaand aan de herdenking is er een stille tocht vanaf de Dam naar de Stopera.nbspIn de nacht van 9 op 10 november 1938 vonden er in heel Duitsland massale aanvallen plaats op Joodse bedrijven, winkels en synagogen door de nazis. Er werden 1400 synagogen in brand gestoken en gesloopt en ongeveer 7500 winkels en bedrijven van Joden werden vernield. Er vielen tientallen doden en duizenden gewonden. De nazis voerden meer dan 30.000 mensen af naar concentratiekampen.nbspDe nacht wordt jaarlijks door heel Europa herdacht. In Amsterdam vindt de nationale herdenking in de Portugese Synagoge plaats. Onder andere Chanan Hertzberger, de voorzitter van het Centraal Joods Overleg, en demissionair minister van Sociale Zaken Marieumllle Paul houden een toespraak.nbspEen speciale gast die aanwezig is bij de herdenking, is de Duitse minister van Onderwijs Karin Prien. Prien is in Amsterdam geboren en heeft een Joodse achtergrond. Het is voor het eerst dat een Duitse minister aanwezig is bij de herdenking.nbspStille tochtVoorafgaand aan de herdenking wordt er eerst een stille tocht gehouden. [2/2] This year’s melt was driven by a snow-poor winter and summer heatwaves. Glaciers below 3k m lost over 2 m of ice. Shrinking glaciers also destabilize mountains, as seen in May, when a rock–ice avalanche buried Blatten in the Lötschental.
