Make the Goddamn meal and put it in your Free Fridge. Write the $100 check to the food bank. Ask your local school what they need for the kids and then go about trying to get that stuff.... Do these things regularly and you are making meaningful contributions to your communities.

Government shutdowns are hard on federal employees.
Those getting paid (exempt) are either doing work of several or bored (some need others to do their whole job).
Those who are excepted are paying for gas/transit, childcare, etc. out of savings or racking up debt.

i guess my issue is with the framing more than anything, after re-reading this (twice). saying the situation is challenging but contained is technically true if relative to how bad it could get if the entire thing collapses. but that also feels really misleading, given all the chaos on the ground
