Good news and bad news.

Good news: in several matters, the US government plainly have not thought-through their policies and so are facing repeated set backs in courts. Amateur hour stuff.

Bad news: they still have four years to get their act together.

The irony that it is debt awareness week when so many are threatened with PIP and carers allowance being taken away. If the private sector, health sector and social care have to step in, this will cost tax payers more. Morally but also economically bankrupt.

Seeing as it’s the Ides of March, here’s our very fun guide to how Julius Caesar rose to power and then destroyed the stability of the state, ignored the law, undermined political institutions, and leveraged the wealth of the richest man in the nation… ahem…

Two things struck me in the 20 year change in whether other countries trade more with China or USA:

1. China took over the world market fast; and

2. Trump has to be one of the STUPIDEST people ever to go after 3 of the few remaining countries that trade more with US: Mexico, Canada, & Greenland.

This is an excellent weekend essay at FT on Trump and the end of American soft power - by Joseph Nye who popularised the terms "soft power".

Well worth your time reading - and includes many insightful points about legal/judicial/constitutional power.

Trump and the end of American soft power
Joseph Nye coined the term for the influence countries exert through attraction. Here he sets out why exclusive nationalism is likely to prove a losing strategy

Time for Europe to put its money (and economy) where its mouth is for Ukraine’s defence. It is typical having complained that they were not stepping up Trump now claims the EU is a rival when they start to. Expect tariffs soon. The days of shared peace and prosperity are ending.

Trump and Vance have shown every reason for the free world to worry as Zelenskyy is treated to a haranguing considered “great television” by POTUS. Your security and liberty is subject to whether it’s good business.

Starmer not inviting Baltic states to summit is dropping the ball.

Jannik Sinner ban makes tennis look ridiculous. He didn’t cheat, he got no performance enhancing benefit, but still a three month ban to show how revellant WADA is. All over someone else’s treated cut finger touching him. news.sky.com/story/world-...

Played tennis at a club for first time in 20 years last night, thanks to support budget for bro. Two hours paying for today, but I’m still smiling. Lot’s of fun despite 2 celsius.

Raducanu can play well enough to warrant a wildcard entry. The problem is she cannot sustain that level of play the tour demands to have the ranking. She has a fanbase and name recognition which means she will merit getting them still. Hope she can maintain fitness/no injury to not need a wc soon.

Really thought the one silver lining from “The Phantom Menace” is that it might warn people about trade wars given how the Sith are behind it, to bring down the republic and impose an emperor.

I get the economics escaping popular culture. But Star Wars. Unforgivable.

Madison Keys revealed what seems a simple truth in sport yet so hard to do. The right mindset is essential to fulfil your talent and athletic potential. If you need to feel a winner all the time, tennis will destroy you. Her run best seen since Emma’s at US Open. Just brilliant.

Zverev speaks so elegantly, whether defending Novak’s retirement or for people with diabetes. However it will be the shout of believe “Oyla and Brenda” which will forever reverberate around him, which means he cannot be an ambassador for the sport.
