They say the roots of thrash metal are NWOBHM + punk — but really the punk aspect is attitude, because the *musicianship* of thrash needs precision. Hetfield is ‘simply’ chugging an open E here — the other 3 are giving the song its dynamic — but he’s the anchor. Lars didn’t set the tempo, James did.

Now would be a great time to pick up some of my music. My one and only guitar needs some rewiring done, and my hands don't really do fine, detailed work like this anymore without pain and shaking. I miss guitar, and want to get back to finishing up my next planned album.
