On April 17, 1825, France forced Haiti to pay for its independence.

The harmful and lasting effects of the "debt of independence" continue to manifest themselves in the political, social, economic, humanitarian and human rights situation of the country to this day.

José Daniel's powerful voice in the European Parliament. He denounces human rights violations in Cuba, prison conditions and harassment against all activism, including humanitarian work, in Cuba

Read muy colleague @kderderian1.bsky.social thread about the José Daniel intervention 🇨🇺👇
Great to see Cuban rights defender José Daniel Ferrer speak at @europarl.europa.eu yesterday.

He reminds us: “Those arrested in 2021 face constant threats of being sent back to prison for our political activism and even in my case for my humanitarian activism."

Leonardo Romero Negrin was arrested today in Havana while protesting with a blank slate.
Activists have denounced that he is being held in the Dragones station and was beaten by state security forces.
Cuban authorities must respect peaceful protest and immediately release Leo.

On 10 March, the Cuban government announced that the release process, initiated in January after talks with the Vatican, had been completed.

Under what criteria have some people been released from prison while others remain in prison for exercising their human rights?

Activists and #DDDHH organizations denounce the arbitrary detention of @AmnistiaOnline POC Felix Navarro and his wife, Sonia Alvarez Campillo. Their activism and leadership have earned them decades of jail and repression.
Felix, Sonia, Sayli, all must be released immediately and unconditionally now.

The releases have been characterized by the exclusion of the victims and their families, and the absence of guarantees that they will not be detained again if they are perceived to be dissenting voices or opponents of the Government.

Cuba: One month after releases were announced, hundreds remain in prison
The releases have been full of irregularities. Cuban authorities have failed to guarantee the freedom of prisoners of conscience.

Excellent thread from my wonderful colleague @kderderian1.bsky.social on our concerns about the recent announcement of releases from prison in Cuba.
In early 2025, #Cuba released 171+ arbitrarily detained people.

But the release process has been marred by irregularities & a lack of state transparency.

No acknowledgement of the existence of individuals detained for political reasons, nor any list of those included in the process.
