We have breaking news in Inside Medicine.
We had heard rumors of RIFs to CDC.
But this is the first visual confirmation that it has occurred tonight, and at high levels in the agency.
Here is what we know...and then some well-sourced rumors (but rumors, nonetheless, not confirmed) 🧵...

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines.
The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds.
It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

If there was a “coarsening” of society, surely it occurred when businesses were established to profit off denying people healthcare. The main joke people are making in response to Thompson’s death is merely to treat it with the bloodless bureaucratic indifference that these companies perfected.

This may seem to be harmless silliness, but as Joe points out, people are developing LLMs for things like drug dosing, and the goddamn things can’t even read scientific notation.
Training data: “An otherwise healthy adult should take 10^-3 g of drug X”
LLM: Take 7g of drug X.”

I looked up millisecond pulsars and found really fun and probably generalizable case of LLMs making a mess of things. It’s only off by 6-7 orders of magnitude!

In the fast world of IVD development and roll out (needed) it can be frustrating how inflexible regulations are.
But at least the conversation is still happening.
