As an Oregonian, I have seen the decline of @opb.org —it’s depressing, but we have other great journalists: please financially support @oregoncapitalchronicle.com @oregonjournalism.bsky.social @thewesternedge.bsky.social @wweek.com #UpliftnewsLocal (Emily Harris)—we need to know what’s going on!
If you want to understand how far-reaching the corporate rot in media is, read this gutting piece about the fall of Oregon Public Broadcasting.

(And follow @ryanjhaas.bsky.social and @leahsottile.bsky.social’s new publication @thewesternedge.bsky.social which will be amazing bc they’re amazing)
This is easily the hardest thing I've ever had to write.

Excellent reporting by @oregonjournalism.bsky.social —OR is 50th in reading—yes 50th!!! Other states are doing things, Oregon leadership is not. This could change but it will require adults to prioritize kids over their own comfort. www.wweek.com/news/state/2...
Leaving It Up to the Locals Impedes Oregon’s Much-Needed Reading Recovery
Unlike other states, Oregon funds its 197 school districts but does little to hold them to account for their outcomes.

Oregon: 50th in the country in reading and our @tinakotek.bsky.social thinks “so far so good.” Other states are making changes so all children are taught to read, why is Oregon privileging adult comfort over children’s futures?

I have to disagree w/ @felixsalmon.com on the Elon question. As @espiers.bsky.social started to talk about, NASA was gutted, so was higher ed, so we don’t know how many other great things would have come from spreading funds around. My favorite on this is @albertwenger.bsky.social -1/2

Oregon: last in reading, Dems in charge, don't believe other states can teach us anything. We have a crisis, and the Dems act like all we need is more $$. More $ won't solve this crisis. TY @oregonjournalism.bsky.social for speaking up for kids. www.oregonjournalismproject.org/leaving-it-u...

Here in Minneapolis, hundreds of clergy from all over the country have been deployed into the streets to participate in ICE/DHS watch.

The hail from a range of religious traditions, and have come from all over.

This particular group is in a heavily immigrant neighborhood.

It is amazing to see @orsenjaneensollman.bsky.social & @rickiruizor.bsky.social continually stand up for Oregon's kids. Many people don't want change, but it's time to prioritize kids over adult comfort. Great to see Dems who know what real leadership looks like.

Just finished @aptshadow.bsky.social Children of Time series. My gods-so good! Funny, humane, and the plots move like a freight train( not easy when covering 1000s of yrs.) I don't understand how he can get into the POV of spiders and make me care, but by golly, I DID!!! I really liked the books.

THis is for @tinakotek.bsky.social who wants to be Oregon’s governor again. Our ed system is in crisis (50th & you don’t declare an emergency?). There are things we can do. They are hard, and it means you start caring about children more than not adults, but that’s what needs to happen.
Louisiana has lots to like:

- 4th grade reading gains second only to MS
- no third grade retention as of the 2024 NAEP, so no risk of selection effect
- 8th grade reading gains
- replication of its model in TN
- portable model that works in any state OR DISTRICT

For the antidote to sloppy skepticism about Mississippi, look to Louisiana
Tired of the Mississippi mistrust doom loop? Louisiana offers a counterweight. The Bayou State deserves more attention for its own smart model, anyway.
