I do think that like, being able to glimpse someone's strange desires and go "well that doesn't have anything to do with me" is price of admission to polite society. Cannot emphasize enough how unbelievably loserish it is to go freak-bashing.

I grew up in the kind of impoverished rural county where the US military recruits their cannon fodder, and I gotta say there's no reason to have any sympathy for anyone who enlists, nor has there ever been. Poor people still have agency and moral culpability. We aren't just lumpen NPCs.

Perhaps now people will stop wishcasting about the US military refusing illegal orders. That's not a thing that happens. The 100% compliance rate with using civilian boats for target practice was a bit of a tell.
