Scientific conferences are becoming prohibitively expensive…for everyone. What can we do about this? 😔

This makes me so happy and proud 🥹 🧬 🪸 🔬 I hope they are happy and proud too. I hope that I’m creating an environment where students feel excited to learn and explore, but also safe to mess up. Because that is science.

Not a fish or a dragon scale, but a single cell of a #protistsonsky. This rhizarian testate amoeba creates perfect tiny glass scales to build it's shell. From a peat bog. #protistaday.

In case you're wondering how scientists can say that many shark populations are threatened with extinction while some US fishermen report that they've never seen so many sharks, the answer is shifting baselines: how much things have changed depends on when you start counting.

I often echo this sentiment. The Earth will go on (microbes will be content), but we might not be here. We NEED a healthy ocean.

Despite all of this. I remain hopeful. Especially through the eyes of students aspiring scientists.

We are integrating more science based solutions into conservation, restoration, AND decision/policy making.

If you know a coral reef scientist, give them a big hug (and contact info for a good therapist). Not gonna lie. It is becoming increasingly difficult to monitor your study sites as they die y’all 😢

Evidence of spillover benefits from large-scale marine protected areas to purse seine fisheries
Global tuna fisheries are valued at more than $40 billion, with the majority of this value derived from purse seine fisheries. Recently created large-scale marine protected areas are potentially big e...
